about The Finisterra Piano Trio

The Finisterra Trio

The Finisterra Piano Trio has been thrilling audiences in the United States and abroad since 2003. The Finisterra Piano Trio’s extensive repertoire embraces musical works from the standard literature to newly commissioned and composed works. The trio has formed a unique reputation as interpreters of contemporary and traditional masterworks in the warm tradition of past masters.

Recent projects have included recordings of Shostakovich Trio No. 2 and Lalo Trio No. 3 on the Seasons label as well as the complete trios of American Composer Daron Hagen on the Naxos label.  Ned Rorem called Finisterra’s performance of Hagen’s works “exquisite” and disc was acknowledged as “one of the five best American Contemporary Classical Releases of 2010” by NPR.  “The Finisterra Piano Trio, with its prowess and finesse, deserves every second of your attention.” (NPR, 2010)  Hagen’s Piano Trio No. 3 was written for the Finisterra Trio and Trio No. 4 was commissioned, premiered and recorded by the trio in a premiere performance recorded with Bill McGlaughlin.  The Finisterra Piano Trio’s rich relationship with Mr. Hagen has also produced a chamber opera for Soprano, Tenor, and Piano Trio called Cradle Song that was also commissioned for the trio and premiered at the Seasons Fall Festival.

The Finisterra Piano Trio was awarded top prizes at the Zinetti International Chamber Music competition in Italy and the Greenlake National Chamber Music Competition.  They are Artists In Residence at the Phoenix Series in New York City and the Seasons Fall Festival and Methow Valley Chamber Music Festival in the Pacific Northwest.  This season the trio begins a new concert series called the New Lens series in collaboration with Garrett Shatzer and Juhi Bonsal.  New Lens concerts present traditional masterworks side by side with thoroughly vetted contemporary works in concerts designed to inspire any audience member in the belief that music education may make an experience richer but should not be a prerequisite for its experience.

Recent highlights include performances at the Hudson Opera House Series, Salon Harlem Series, University of Puget Sound, Lopez Island Chamber Series, Fox Island Concert Series, Bloedel Reserve, Methow Valley Chamber Music Festival, the Waterland Chamber Series, and the Camarata Chamber Series.
